Yield and quality of some sugar beet cultivars belong to three formal types

  • ObjectiveThe present study is an attempt to distinguish different cultivars belong to three types in terms of yields and quality to provide reference on utilization in agriculture industry.MethodTwo field trials were conducted to study the behavior of four cultivars belonging to each of the three formally differentiated types E(Ertrag),Z(Zucker)and N (Normal)at Sakha Experimental Station,Kafer El-Sheikh governorate(Northern Delta)during 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons.ResultData obtained in the study revealed that the beet type E surpassed Z and N types significantly in average root weight and root yield(ton/fed).However,Z type exhibited the highest Pol(sucrose),sugar recovery(extractable%sugar)and extractability percentage and the lowest impurities and sugar lost to molasses.Sugar yield was found to be the result of a combination of all the productivity and quality aspects studied in this work, data indicated that irrespective of the three types,Farida and Lp11 cultivars exhibited the highest and lowest sugar yield. On the other hand, within the beet types, the highest sugar production per feddan(4200 m2)was recorded by Farida(E type),Glereos(Z type)and Kawemira(N type)cultivars,in both the seasons.ConclusionOur studies will help in solving this problem as this work has projected the N type cultivars as an intermediate amongst all type in having the medium root yield as well as the sugar content, the cultivation of which will benefit the farmers as well as the millers.
