Observation on antennae sensilla of Rhabdoscelus lineaticollis (Heller)with scanning electron microscope

  • ObjectiveUltrastructure, species and distribution of antennae sensilla of male and female adult Rhabdos-celus lineaticollis(Heller)were observed in order to provide a theoretical basis for further exploring the use of sex phero-mones in control of R.lineaticollis.MethodThe external morphological characteristics, types and distribution of anten-na sensilla of male and female adult R.lineaticollis were observed by scanning electron microscope.SPSS 21.0 was used to calculate and analyze the data, independent sample t-test was conducted to compare the difference in langth and diame-ter of antennal segments and sensilla number between male and female adult R.lineaticollis.ResultThe external mor-phological characteristics of male and female were the same, which were geniculate including scape, pedicel and flagel-lum. On their antennae, there were three types of sensilla(sensillum chaetica, sensillum trichodeum and paddle-shaped sensillum). Sensilla chaetica contained five sub-types,sensilla trichodeum three and paddle-shaped sensilla three. The number and types of sensilla chaetica were the abundant. There was obvious sexual dimorphism in terms of sensilla of male and female adult R. lineaticollis.ConclusionSensillum trichodeum plays a very important role in the search for host and spouse of R.lineaticollis,in which the number of STⅠ,STⅢand STIV in the male antennae is significantly larger than that of the female, which is related to the susceptible pheromone. But the number of STⅡin female antennae is signifi-cantly greater than that of male, which is related to searching for spawning grounds.
