Post-anthesis accumulation and remobilization of dry matter and grain growth charactenstics in high quality indica rice

  • ObjectiveField experiments were conducted to investigate the post-anthesis accumulation and remobilization of dry matter and grain growth characteristics in high quality indica rice.MethodThree indiea rice varieties, viz.,Baguixiang,Guihuazhan and Zhengui'ai(CK)were used in field experiments during the early and late cropping seasons in 2007.ResultsHigh-quality rice varieties Baguixiang and Guihuazhan showed higher dry weight of leaf and stem in single shoot,as well as higher dry matter translocation ratio and rotes in leaf after heading stage.Little difference was observed in dry matter remobilization in stem between the high-quality rice and the contml after heading.Dry matter accumulation in trains of three rice cultivars wero simulated using Richard equation,high-quality rice revealed early start in initial filling, longer period of active tilling and lower maximum filling rate.About 1/5th-1/3th part of dry matter in grain was found to come after remobilization of dry matter from leaf and stem after heading.ConclusionThe data indicated that grain growth was correlated with dry matter redistribution in leaf.It can be concluded that higher dry matter accumulation in leaf and its remobilization was one of the most important physiological reogons for imparting high quality in rice.
