Bibliometric analysis of the research trend of global invasive mollusk control agents

Abstract: 【Objective】 The research status, key areas, and development trends of control agents for global invasive molluscs were systematically reviewed, in order to provide a reference for the research and development of invasive mollusk control technologies. 【Method】 Based on the 59 invasive mollusk species recorded in the Global Invasive Species Database (GISD), literatures related to control agents were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection for the period from January 1, 1995 to December 1, 2025. After manual screening and deduplication, the bibliographic data were imported into CiteSpace for visual analysis of country collaboration networks, institution collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence, keyword cluster, keyword cluster timeline, and keyword burst detection. Annual publication output was visualized using the R programming language. 【Result】 A total of 675 publications related to control agents for invasive mollusks were collected, with a rapid increase in annual output observed since 2020. These studies were contributed by 662 institutions across 43 countries, among which the United States and the United Kingdom exhibited the highest publication outputs (149 and 116 respectively) and intermediary centrality values (0.52 and 0.36 respectively), indicating their dominant positions in this field. Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom produced the largest number of publications (23), while South China Agricultural University showed the highest intermediary centrality (0.32). Keyword analysis revealed that the main target species of research included Pomacea canaliculataDreissena polymorphaLimnoperna fortuneArion lusitanicusDeroceras reticulatum, and Crassostrea gigas. The research focus has gradually shifted from early studies on biological control, nematode-based control, chemical agents and their efficacy and safety evaluation to investigations of molecular mechanisms, diversified biological control strategies represented by RNA interference (RNAi)technology, and integrated pest management. 【Conclusion】 Research on control agents for invasive mollusks worldwide has developed rapidly in recent years. The United States and the United Kingdom occupy leading positions internationally in this field. Although China has been active in publishing related research, its international collaboration still needs to be strengthened. Research hotspots have shifted from traditional chemical screening toward an integrated approach that emphasizes green, precise, and sustainable management. In the future, international collaboration should be strengthened, the mechanisms of action at molecular targets should be further elucidated, and the ecological safety evaluation of control agents should be refined, to accelerate the development and application of novel environmentally friendly control agents and integrated management technologies.
